being relatively poor myself, i find it very hard to come up with any sympathy for anybody who has amassed $20,000 worth of credit card debt. i can't even GET that much credit, much less buy that much crap. perhaps we should be thinking about teaching the younger generation how to avoid large amounts of debt rather than helping someone we don't know dig out of a hole she created in the first place.

Then poor little Karyn decides she just can't control her urges and she just can't stop buying things until all the money lent to her, is gone. She obviously has no self control. She will probably end up filing bankruptcy in the long run anyway because this pathetic attempt at paying back the creditors is not doing a damn thing. On her site she lists a small list of her balances, her ebay funds and the donations and then her payments. Then she deducts that from her credit balance? We'll first off now we know why she is in the position she is in. She must be forgetting about the interest accumulating each month? She can't be that naive can she? For instance if she really did put 1102.67 towards the balance of $19,533.72 total debt from July 14, 2002, her new balance would be around $18,543.37. Here is why. We don't know what her interest rate on the credit is, so even if we give her a low rate of even 6.900% for the whole amount, which would be good, her balance would be reduced by about 990.00 The interest would still eat up over 100.00 each month, so even if she could make these kinds of a payments towards her overall credit debt each month she is still going to end up paying alot more than she thinks she owes in the long run. Even at a 6.900% interest rate it would take years to finally payoff. I don't believe that she cares about the interest rates and taxes in the future, (like she says on her site) simply because she was careless with her OWN financial being, so why would she care about people she doesn't know? This little yuppie-gone-bust is not honest. On her site you will notice her sitting in front of her laptop. Laptops are not cheap. If she was hard up for cash wouldn't it be wise to sell the luxury laptop and just work on a decent cheap desktop while she pays everything off. She is broke but she can pay for her domain name and have it hosted monthly too? I believe she is taking advantage of people in this country because we are giving people. The sick thing is, that she lives in the same state where one of the biggest tragedies of all time happened to the people of our country. Yes she lives in New York and she wants to take advantage of the people. She wont even show her pathetic face on her poorly designed website. I despise this poor excuse she is using to get donations. It is very sad. She is not broke by any means. Yet she continues to tell people she is. She is lying. Actually, regarding the interest argument - I could have sworn that I read somewhere on her site that she paid all of the finance charges on her own, independent of the debt tally...and of course, there are always 0.0% introductory rate cards (assuming that you read the fine print and make sure they won't apply a higher rate retroactively if you close the account too quickly).

That said - I don't agree with what she is doing. I read (I think it was salon.com or a similar site) that she *was* making in the 100k range, before she lost her job. Now, she settles for a paltry 40-60k...she did say half, right? Considering that there are entire families that live on far less than that, we know that this girl is not poor - she comes up with around $100 of her own each week, not to mention the finance charges she pays.

Even if she were poor, there are possible explanations for the laptop and hosting site. The laptop could be a leftover perk from a former job...or the perk of a current job...possibly an old gift from family or a friend...she could have purchased it used - half.com often has laptops under $600...It could be financed - part of the debt :P A laptop does not make you rich :)

As for the domain and hosting services - it's really not that expensive anymore, especially when it's bringing in more cash than it is costing you. I'm a broke college student, and I could certainly scrape together the funds to put up a begging site...assuming that I possessed a similar sense of entitlement and lack of pride in fixing my own mistakes.

One last thing...I think it is really low to post someone's personal info like that, whether you have a problem with their actions or not. I realize that personal info is readily available on the internet, but there are still a lot of people who *don't* know that or don't know how to find it. I just don't want to see Save Karyn, Part 2 - I'm a super nice girl, now help me pay for my bodyguards and home security system...

In case anyone hasn't heard. Karyn paid off all her debt. All $20,000 is now history. And with any hope will stay that way. So, scam or not she got the money.

She did however do one thing that she promised but really didn't need too. She has kept her promise to pass the buck to someone else.

Grandly more disturbing and disturbed than Karen is the person that is posting her address and, of all the inane details, her running times. Google factiods don't seem purposeful or appropriate. She was honest about how stupid she was and she was honest about why she was soliciting money. Pretty strait forward. Pretty noninvasive and nonagressive. I would never try to curtail anyone's right to have or post an opinion about that woman, but I am really shocked that anyone would encourage harassment about this and then receive kudos. THE TRUTH hasn't posted his home address and phone number so I can call him and disagree with his public post, and I am sure he would be pretty freaked if I traced him back and gave him a call, just to let him know that I thought he was wrong. I have sent like 4 emails to karyn and not one were answered. To be honest, I think that is EXTREMELY rude. Now I can't stand the woman. I have had my site up for 2 months now and have only received 2 donations. I don't even get much email even though the site was on the "USA Today hotsite list for January 8, 2003. This is depressing to me because I spent hundreds of hours on the site and also on the cafepress store front creating new designs for t-shirts and stuff. We don't even have credit card bills because in France you are required to pay all of your bills off each month or face going to court and then they come our to your house and take what they want to cover the bills. I love France but I don't care for some of these out dated laws. I guess in one way it does force people to be more responsible about money and paying bills and such. We really need help to repair our house and I am at my wits end as to what to do at this point. I think that we have a noble cause but I gues because of the Bush/Iraq situation, the French aren't very popular with Americans right now. Guess what? I am actually American. I do live in France with my French cousion and my 3 kids but I am still American.
